Webinar: Open Questions Roundtable: “Again, What Is Populism?”

The CEU Democracy Institute’s De- and Re-Democratization (DRD) Workgroup, the CEU Department of Political Science, and the Review of Democracy launched a new series entitled Open Questions in the Comparative Study of Democracy and Authoritarianism.

This series of short analytic essays raises specific politically relevant questions on democracy and authoritarianism which have not been adequately addressed (or answered) by comparative political science.

The first essay in the series was written by the Democracy Institute’s Senior Research Fellow and Lead Researcher of the De- and Re-Democratization Working Group Andreas Schedler. It deals with the question, “Again, what is populism?”

The essay was discussed in the inaugural Open Questions webinar on March 20, 2024. The participants included Andreas Schedler; Kirk Hawkins, our co-convenor of the Populism and Ideology hub, and Daphne Halikiopoulou, our external expert. The discussion was chaired by Associate Professor at CEU’s Department of Political Science Matthijs Bogaards.
