Publications by Fellows: Youssef El Chazli: I Have Learned Things Late in Life’: The Aftereffects of Revolutionary Participation in Egypt
A new research paper by our Fellow Youssef El Chazli has just been published in the journal Middle East Critique.
According to the abstract, this article discusses the (re)socializing effects of revolutionary participation. Through a longitudinal and in-depth analysis of two life trajectories, it looks at how the participation of individuals during the 2011 uprising in Egypt produced long-lasting effects that structure their daily lives, beliefs, and choices. By studying different patterns and sequences of disengagement, the article argues that disengaging from revolutionary action in a narrow sense does not necessarily mean the abandonment of revolutionary values. It shows on the contrary how activists invest in their private lives, especially in their children’s education, to continue to make sense of their lives.
