Ho-Fung Hung on Chinese-Hungarian Relations

Ho-Fung Hung (Johns Hopkins University) talked to Hungary’s Klubradio about Chinese-Hungarian relations.

The interview was recorded when Ho-Fung Hung was at the DI participating in the DI Annual Conference, a few weeks after Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Budapest. Regarding the visit, he said it had been largely ceremonial, rather than aiming to implement any concrete project.

“Hungary is undeniably China’s most intimate friend in the EU.”

Ho Fung-Hung cautioned the Hungarian government from becoming too dependent on China. “Hungary should focus on its own interests, those of Hungarian businesses, not on those of the Chinese. Let us not be mistaken, China only puts its own goals first,” he said. He also noted that the One Road-One Belt project has lost its momentum.
