David Karas in Süddeutsche Zeitung on the Hungarian Economy
David Karas commented to German daily Süddeutsche Zeitung, in an article about Hungary’s economic crisis.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s greatest enemy is the economic crisis Hungary is experiencing, Süddeutsche Zeitung reports. He came into power 16 years ago promising prosperity. Now, the ailing Hungarian economy may cost him the office.
David Karas is quoted discussing Hungary’s economic trajectory after the collapse of Communist rule in 1989. He notes that, following the fall of the Iron Curtain, Hungary became dominated by foreign capital to an extent unparalleled even within Central and Eastern Europe. The market opened rapidly, and investors poured into the country from all directions. When Orban won his first landslide victory in 2010, he pledged to return control of the Hungarian economy to Hungarian hands.
